Hiking America - When to Animal Watch

The majesty of a wild animal in their natural habitat is unmatched. Animal watching can be a great way to catch a glimpse of the splendor of nature. A recreational hike or a ride through scenic roadways can afford one the opportunity to see many animals. It is important to understand when and where to see different animals so you are prepared when you strike out on a trek to spot that magnificent creature. Forays into nature during late summer and early fall, August through October, are great times to catch some magnificent sites.

Moose: August - October
The moose is one of those great beasts that many people set out to spot. It can be seen throughout the Northern Hemisphere, especially in the northern, coniferous forests. It is an awe-inspiring animal that can reach heights of 7 feet and weigh as much as 1,500 pounds. It is easily spotted during a drive along undeveloped areas of the highway or through scenic roadways. They can also be spotted on trips down the many waterways in New England. They like to munch on the tender water plants and the ferns and young trees along clearings and roadways. Late summer and early fall, as the nights begin to cool, is the best time to spot these giants. Early morning and dusk are common times for moose to be out and about.

Grizzly Bear: June - September
The grizzly bear can be seen along the Western Mountain range, from Northern California to Alaska. Alaska and Western Canada have a higher population than the continental U.S. These bears often make their way to the coast for the running of the salmon and can be seen along many streams and rivers. They can be seen from June to September fishing, lounging in the underbrush, or eating young shoots and berries. Some of Alaska's parks and sanctuaries afford the best chance of spotting one of these large brown bears.

Black Bear: May - September
The black bear has a much larger habitat, ranging from the Arctic Circle down to Mexico. It lives in the forests and mountains, and like its brown bear counterpart, can be spotted from late spring to early fall. Northern forests or the Appalachian mountain range make great areas to spot a black bear. It is active in the fall preparing for hibernation. This bear can often be spotted foraging in berry patches and along rivers. They are also often found around dump sites, or anywhere food might be left unattended for long periods. The black bear is spooked easily so observance from a distance is the best bet.

Bison/Buffalo: July - October
Bison, or buffalo, are an endangered species due to extreme hunting practices during the early to mid-19th century. Most of the bison today are located in Yellowstone National Park. They run free within the park and can be seen throughout the area. Bison mate from July to early August and the calves are born in April or May. These young bison can be seen in late spring and early summer. Bison can be seen throughout the summer and they are easy to spot on the prairies during late summer and early fall as they get ready for winter.

It is important to be safe and give the animals their distance when observing them. Many people have been seriously injured or killed due to pushing too close. The animals will often ignore watchers who keep a distance and this provides the best opportunity to see them in their natural setting. Pack a lunch, put on the hiking boots, or jump in the car, and head out to watch these splendid creatures.

Kayaking in Karnataka

Kayaking is a powerful means of giving access to wildlife which would otherwise be difficult to see, due to the density of the forestation by the riverside. For maximum opportunities to report wild life and for an extended family adventure tour on the water, kayaking trip is a viable option.

You can try out kayaking in an area with minimal current. This is ideal for beginners trying to come to terms with the techniques of paddling. Indeed, kayaking can be more of a calming tour into nature than a sortie into the exciting world of a stunt performer. The Kayaking tour offered in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state is something one cannot miss. A rich variety of bird life can be seen along the water bodies of Uttara Kannada. Dandeli is another kayaking destination for you and your family. It is a short trip from Goa and within overnight striking distance of Bangalore city. Here, a number of water and adventure sports are offered. It is one of the top locations in the land of kayaking, canoeing and rafting.

To every kayakers, the rapids which violently shake the inflatable rafts on their descent of the Kali River in Karnataka, present a white water sporting challenge. Beginners receive basic training and close supervision, in addition to all of the necessary equipment. Two kayaking trips are run each day, and a two-our paddle training session costs Rs 650 per person.

Majali Beach Village located at Karwar is a small coastal town lies on the northern tip of coastal Karnataka. The village is having a small lake in the backyard which is suited for family adventure sports like Kayaking, rowing and fishing.

Best season for kayaking in this river starts from November to June. Therefore, if you are a beginner, staying upright in the kayak was more of a challenge. Flat water is a difficult thing to manage. Once you control it, it is all fun for you!

River Rafting: An Overview

White-water rafting can be one of the most exhilarating experiences of a lifetime. River rafters see breathtaking scenery, get great exercise, and experience terrific adventure. There are great places to go river rafting all over the world, but many of the best rivers for white-water rafting are here in the United States.

It’s a good idea to contact a licensed river rafting agency to plan a rafting trip. These agencies, found near most major rivers, provide trained guides and planned routes for rafting rides. Many agencies also provide training for novice river rafters. These services are especially good for people rafting for the first time.

River rafting has been a sport for decades. The person generally credited with inventing river rafting is Bill Dvorak. In 1969, Dvorak was the first person issued a river recreation outfitters license when he formed Dvorak Expeditions in Salida, Colorado. Dvorak created many of the safety guidelines and license requirements for equipment used in white-water rafting. He came up with the idea of having guides lead rafting tours.

There are many great places to go white-water rafting in the United States. One of the most popular is the American River, which starts in the Sierra Nevada and splits into the North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork before converging near Sacramento, CA. The American River provides a wide variety of river rafting experiences, from easy rapids for beginners to difficult stretches navigated by expert rafters.

White-water rapids are rated based on their level of difficulty. Water speed, currents, the amount of rocks, and other factors influence the river's rating. The easiest rivers to navigate are Class I; Class VI rivers are considered impossible to run. As equipment has become more advanced, many rivers previously defined as Class IV became Class V, and extremely skilled rafters have begun navigating them safely.

River rafting is a fun and challenging sport. A river rafting vacation is perfect for people who love challenges and being in the great outdoors.

Snake River Rafting Trip - The Ultimate in Rafting, Some Would Say

One of the best things that you can do in the summer months is to plan to take a Snake River rafting trip that vends its way through Hells Canyon in Idaho. The thrill of this particular river is so great that many consider it to be the ultimate in rafting adventures. The National Recreation Area covers more than six thousand five hundred acres of some of the most awesome and rugged wild areas on this planet and this alone are sufficient reason to choose to take a Snake River rafting trip.

He Devil Mountain

There is the awe-inspiring eight thousand feet drop from He Devil Mountain to the wondrous Snake River that will leave you marveling at the wonders of nature. Once you have taken a Snake River rafting trip down these parts you will want more and more of these breathtaking natural gorges. Companies like Hughes River Expedition, Inc. offer a wide selection of Snake River rafting trips that take place during the months May through September.

You can check their specialty trips as well as schedule of rates as well as online reservation pages to find out more about when to take Snake River rafting trip and also the costs involved as well as availability of accommodation and listing of departures.

A good reason why you should opt to go on a Snake River rafting trip is that there are numerous Native American as well as pioneering historic sites located along the Snake River in Hells Canyon that are well worth checking out. In fact, you won't find such interesting sites in any other part of the US. Once you take a Snake River rafting trip you can stop over to take a look at photographs, check out house pits, and pioneer's cabins as well as the many different mines.

In fact, the geology as well as geography of this part of America is so awe-inspiring that you will never regret taking a Snake River rafting trip. On the contrary, you will want to come back for more. The Snake River offers very high volume of flows and the warm waters are ideally suited for taking a dip and of course the well known rapids provide excellent rafting opportunities.

Utah's Green River rafting trips are famous and also very popular with those who like white water rafting. The Green River stretches from Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area that is situated close to Vernal in Utah and goes all the way to Dinosaur National Monument after which it traverses some Utah's most rugged as well as remote landscapes.

River Rafting in Colorado

The sport of river rafting was practically invented in Colorado. In the late 1960s Bill Dvorak came up with many safety standards for equipment and many guidelines for proper rafting technique. His Dvorak Expeditions company was the first licensed river recreation outfitter in the country. In the decades since, river rafting has become a hugely popular pastime in Colorado and around the world. Colorado river rafting is some of the best in the world. Some of the most notable of Colorado's many rivers are the Arkansas River, the Colorado River, and the Dolores River. Each one offers rafters a unique and exciting experience.

The Arkansas River starts near Leadville, Colorado and extends through the Midwest, cutting through Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas before emptying into the Mississippi River. There are many beautiful and famous sights on the Arkansas River, including Royal Gorge and Big Horn Sheep Canyon. The rapids on the Arkansas River range from class II all the way to Class V, depending on the part of the river. There are countless excursions offered on different stretches of the Arkansas River lasting from a half day to several days.

The Colorado River begins in the Rocky Mountains and is almost 1,500 miles in length. It is one of the most majestic rivers in the world, stretching through several states and even into Mexico before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. Some sights along the Colorado River worth mentioning are the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam. There are countless river rafting tours on the Colorado River, ranging from beginner's excursions to some of the most intense rapids found anywhere.

The Dolores River is another great spot for Colorado river rafting. The Dolores River is a 250-mile long tributary of the Colorado River. It runs through the states of Colorado and Utah. Ponderosa Gorge on the Dolores River offers rafters exciting Class III and IV rapids, while Slickrock Canyon has Class II and III rapids. The Dolores River is one of the most scenic parts of the country.

Colorado river rafting is an exciting adventure. What better place to go river rafting than the place where it originated?

Walking in Slovenia - The Spectacular Julian Alps and Beautiful Soca River Valley

In a tiny Slovenian hamlet tranquillity reigns and village life is still dominated by the seasonal routines - driving the sheep up to high pastures when the snows clear, the daily process of turning their milk into cheese, hay-making (the meadows need to be cut 4 times a year - usually by hand!), mushroom-picking in the autumn and tending abundant little vegetable gardens to ensure a supply of fresh greens throughout the year. This calm, pastoral scene is set beneath the stunning, limestone peaks of the Julian Alps, which soar dramatically above the villages and hamlets on the rolling meadowland below.

The Julian Alps are the easternmost outpost of the Alpine range that stretches in a crescent across southern central Europe. They are named in honour of Julius Caesar (Cividale, just across the border in Italy, was founded by Caesar as Forum Iulii). The highest peak is Mount Triglav at 2,864m and the beautiful emerald So
a River rises in the heart of the Julian Alps, cutting a serpentine valley southwards into Italy, where it becomes the Isonzo.

A unique feature of these mountains is that they formed the front line of what became known as the Isonzo Front, during World War One. Between 1915 & 1917, the Italians faced the Austro-Hungarians on a battlefield like no other - the peaks and ridges of the high Alps - and today, there is still a lot of fascinating evidence of that conflict in the shape of lines of trenches, caves dug into the mountainsides, and some poignant memorials to the fallen, high up near the peaks.

2007 marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Caporetto, which saw a combined Austro-Hungarian and German force overwhelm their Italian opposition at the town of Caporetto, in what is now Slovenia, and advance to within 70 miles of Venice. This breakthrough marked the culmination of 2½ years of bitter armed struggle amongst the formidable mountain peaks and high passes of the Julian Alps, where the awesome terrain made for supremely difficult conditions in which to fight.

Terrible terrain for battle undoubtedly, but the Julian Alps are majestic, soul-fortifying landscapes to walk through and explore in peacetime. And peace is what the friendly inhabitants of Kobarid (formerly Caporetto) and the surrounding villages enjoy in great abundance today. The walking is superb, and very varied. One can stroll down through the woods, accompanied by birdsong and the sound of mountain streams tumbling over waterfalls hidden amongst the trees. In the valley, these streams join the rushing, turquoise-blue waters of the So
a River tumbling over the rocks and hurtling through narrow defiles on the short journey to the Adriatic, while on the plateau above, there is a tiny, frescoed chapel, beautiful waterfalls and flower-filled meadows. A walk on the slopes and saddles of the Julian Alps themselves invariably yields breathtaking views across the valley to Italy, or into the wild, empty expanse of the Triglav National Park. Occasionally, one stumbles across a collapsed trench or an overgrown gun-emplacement, high on a windy ridge, but nature's softening of the scars, and the sheep gently grazing on the gentians all around, are a reminder that there is more than a little truth in the adage "Pax Vincit Omnia".

Slovenia has a very healthy population of wolves, lynx, and brown bears, although you are unlikely to meet any of them (the latter are said to have come north in large numbers to escape the upheavals following the break up of Yugoslavia - bears like a bit of peace and quiet). The forests are home to red deer, roe deer and wild boar, and in these mountains chamois and ibex can also be found. Pine and beech martens are present, as are hares, badgers and foxes. There is wealth of bird-life, including grouse and black grouse, birds of prey (golden eagle, buzzard, hawk, white-tailed eagle), owls (tawny owl, Ural owl, long-eared owl and eagle owl) and woodpeckers (green, black and grey). If you walk in the woods after rain you are almost certain to see the spectacular gold and black mottled skin of a salamander.

Slovenia is home to some 3000 plant species. The majority of the most interesting - of which 70 are endemic and so found only in Slovenia - are 'Alpines'. These include the purple Zois Bellflower, Wulfen's (pink) primrose, Triglav Hawksbeard and many others. Look out for the spectacular mountain lilies and numerous types of orchid. In general the climate and location contribute to lush meadow vegetation and varied deciduous woodland - characterized by well-managed beech forest.

The walking in this region is rewarding any time between May and October. In the spring, the upland meadows are thick with flowers, including many varieties of orchid, and snow lingers picturesquely on the mountain peaks. Summer can be hot, but the air is usually refreshing above 1500m and there are plenty of shady walks to choose from and cool mountain streams to paddle in. October offers crystal clear days and beautiful autumn colours.

There are plenty of activities available in the area. The So a River and its tributaries are superb for organised activities like white-water rafting, canoeing, hydrospeed and canyoning. It is also possible to fish for the marbled trout which is unique to these waters. There are also tandem paragliding flights, horse- riding and mountain biking to be enjoyed. There is an open car-train from Most na So
i to Bohinjska Bistrica, which enables you to visit the beautiful lakes of Bled and Bohinj for the day. The little town of Tolmin has a farmer's market on a Saturday, selling all manner of delicious seasonal treats, whilst a drive to the head of the So
a Valley really takes the breath away, culminating in 25 hair-pins to the Vrši
Pass. The small market town of Kobarid is home to an award-winning museum focusing on the battles of the WW1 Isonzo/So
a front. If you wish to venture over the border, you could spend the day in the charming Italian town of Cividale, with its medieval centre, Celtic hypogeum, Lombard temple, 15th C cathedral, and museums.

There are daily flights from the UK to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, and regular low-cost flights to Trieste (Italy) too, from where is it only 1 ½ hours drive over the border to the So
a River area.

Walking specialist tour operator Upland Escapes offer flexible holidays in the Julian Alps and Soca River area, based in a traditional rural village, in comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. They bring low impact sustainable tourism to the area and their knowledgeable local Manager will introduce you to the people and the magnificent walking in the region. They also provide a lavish daily packed lunch, a Handbook crammed with local information, and a hire-car (carbon neutral of course!) which allows the area to be explored fully with maximum independence.

Ghost Hunting at Famous Castles

The Castle at Tutbury is one of the most haunted Castles in England. It has been the location of the World's Biggest Ghost Hunt and has also featured on Living TVs Most Haunted. Ghost Hunters have been trying to have access to this location due to its chilling and terrifying atmosphere. There are plenty of areas to investigate at haunted Tutbury Castle which belongs to the Crown and with the site of the Castle dating back to the Stone Age and its bloodier past, there is a wealth of paranormal activity to investigate. In the King's bedroom where you are not safe from activity even during the daytime. There is also the Great Hall where many people have witnessed poltergeist activity. Chairs moving on their own are a regular occurrence. People who work there have plenty of stories to tell when it comes to the ghosts and spirits of the Castle.

It is a fascinating place to visit and even more fascinating to ghost hunt there. Tutbury Castle lends itself to any type of ghost hunt event and will ensure that you never leave disappointed. You may see the ghost of Mary Queen of Scots or you may witness the spirit of the little girl in the King's bedroom. However, if you do go on a ghost hunt at Tutbury Castle I would advise you never to be on your own.

I would strongly advise a trip around the Castle during the daytime to get a real sense of the castle ruin and the dungeon. The building which houses some of the most haunted areas in the UK can be quite welcoming at times. Some people have found it homely and inviting. It does taken on a completely different stance at night however, and you may find yourself seeing things that you would never believe to be possible.

Money Saving Tips For First Time Visitors to Las Vegas

This was our second trip to Las Vegas and it did not disappoint. There were more hotels than last time and more being built. A visit to downtown is a must to see the light show in the roof area. A technological marvel. We heard it cost $400 million. To say we wandered around hotels every day seems a strange thing to do but anyone who has visited Las Vegas will understand how facinating that is. Even in February the sun shines and we were able to sunbath around one of the MGM swimming pools.

Five things you should do. Walk into and around every hotel. Take a roller coaster ride at New York New York. Visit the lions and dolphins at the Mirage hotel. Take a helicopter trip over the Grand Canon. And finally take an elevator ride to the top of the Stratosphere hotel to see the fabulous night time view of the Las Vegas strip and surrounding city.

I was not sure if anyone would read an article on money saving tips when visiting Las Vegas. This is the city for gamblers so who is looking to save money? But then I though that, I am not a gambler and I have now visited Las Vegas twice.

Back in 2000 my daughter and I bought my wife a surprise 50th birthday present of a four day trip to Las Vegas. The bonus being it was for four people, which included my wife, myself, my daughter and her husband.

You can fly direct to Las Vegas but this four day visit was an indirect flight stopping at Chicago for four hours then flying on to Las Vegas after four hours stop over. The return flight was the same. So our actual stay in Las Vegas was two full days and three nights. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience especially as I arrange a room upgrade to a suite which looked out over the 'Strip'. We did not gamble much as there was too much to see and do.

Our second visit to Las Vegas was a complete surprise. This Christmas we as a family decided to keep our present buying to a small token gift as we had started two new businesses and money was tight.

Our son who had not come on our first visit to Las Vegas has since had two holidays in Las Vegas with his wife and in-laws. He told us a few months before Christmas that he was taking another holiday to Las Vegas in February with the in-laws and did we want to go as well. Unfortunately we had booked our summer holiday and another holiday before that was not in our budget.

Anyway on Christmas day after all the small gifts were opened our son and his wife gave us a final gift. When my wife opened it we found a 'not new' roulette game, which we thought was a joke gift. He insisted we open the box and we found inside a picture of the MGM hotel in Las Vegas and a lovely short note inviting my wife and I to join them on the visit to Las Vegas, at their expense. We only had to find our spending money. How could we refuse? We had always wanted to go to Las Vegas with him and knew that this year they wanted to start a family and if they did we probably would never get to go to Las Vega with him for many years to come, if ever.

This time we flew direct with Virgin. I must tell you that I have flown with Virgin in the early days and thought them one of the best. But over the years I found the service from Virgin had dropped. This time the service from Virgin was top rate and I would recommend them to anyone.

On this visit to Las Vegas we were staying for a whole week, flying out on an 11am flight from Gatwick on a Friday, which meant leaving home at 5.30am, and returning a week later on a 4pm flight from Las Vegas, landing Saturday morning. Las Vegas airport is a five minute drive from the MGM Hotel.

When we arrived in Las Vegas it was decided to catch a bus to the MGM hotel. They charge $7 per person one way. On our trip back to the Airport at the end of our holiday we caught a taxi. Taxi's charge $9 per trip from the MGM hotel.

Tip 1. If you are staying at the MGM, Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, New York New York hotels, it is cheaper to use a taxi than the shuttle bus if there is more than one of you. But if you are staying further down the 'Strip' then the taxi fare goes up and the shuttle bus may be more cost effective.

On this one week trip my wife and I took to Las Vegas £1000, which converted to $1360 at Feb 09 exchange rates. We converted a further £180 towards the end of the week and paid to see a show on a credit card $160. We returned from Las Vegas with $180.

With an eight hour time difference it was mid afternoon on the Friday even though we had left the UK at 11am and had a 10 hour flight. It's really UK bedtime especially for people of my age.

Tip 2. If it's your first visit you are probably very excited and want to hit the town or hit the gambling but what ever you do try not to go to bed until it's late evening. If you go to bed too early your body clock will take longer to adjust to the time difference.

Our first impressions when we 'hit the town' after we had unpacked was that the place seemed busy as if the 'credit crunch' had not affected Las Vegas. The second thing we noticed was it was not cheap. Having had a number of 'all inclusive holidays' over the last few years we found having to pay for everything quite difficult. For people that are used to spending time in hotels the prices are probably quite normal but for us the prices such as a bottle of Budwisser at $6 seemed expensive.

We visited the New York New York hotel the first evening and the first round of drinks at a bar in the hotel was $35 for 4 bottle beers, one coke and one glass of wine. We decided to have a meal in the same hotel and five had steaks and one had pizza. Very good food. The bill came to $153 + $27 (18% tip) + $11 (15% tax) = $191. we understand from past visits to the US that it is expected to tip 12-15%, which is normally a voluntary option. To find it on the bill at 18% is a bit much, we believe.

Tip 3. We found that the 18% tip included on the bill was normally for groups of 6 or more. Therefore if you ask for your bill in groups of two the 18% tip is omitted from the bill and left to your discretion. We found that 'Dennys' do not add a tip to any bill no matter what size your group is.

The major disappointment we found on this second visit to Las Vegas was that all the 'slot' machines in all the Hotels do not dispense coins as winnings anymore. You feed in dollar bills and if you are lucky to win you will get a slip of paper dispensed as your winning. The tinkering of coins when you win was sadly missing. This slip of paper can be fed into any other slot machine in the same hotel to continue gambling.

Tip 4. If you want to hear the sound of coins dropping with your winning the only place that still uses coins is next to the hotel Circus Circus.

Not being much of a gambler I tended to watch the others but found I wanted a beer while I watched. My son had found on past visits that if you gambled, either on the slots or on the tables, you will be offered complementary drinks from waitresses or barmen at the bar. These drinks are free of charge other than a tip of a couple of dollars to the waitress or barman. The more you gamble the more drinks you are offered.

Every chair in the gambling halls is in front of a slot machine. Even at the bar each seat is in front of a gambling machine embedded in the bar.

Tip 5. It was recommended to me at a number of bars by the barmen that so long as I feed the slot machine with $20 he could feed me complementary drinks. If you win you could be drinking for free all night.

On the first evening of our stay we were advised by my son to join the 'Players' club, which meant queuing with passports to receive individual swipe cards. These cards gave you points when you inserted them in the slot machines before you gambled. If you achieved 1500 points during your stay then you may receive complementary gifts like free buffet meals etc.

Just by signing up to get a 'Players' club card mean we were entitled to a two for one deal on any of the MGM shows. This option only allowed you to buy the expensive seats at $160, not the cheaper seats at $80. We choose to go to see the Circus du Soliel which was great and cost $160 for two of the bests seats.

Tip 6. Join the 'Players' club at any hotel, as soon as you arrive, to ensure you get any complementary deals or freebies going. You can also use your 'Player' card in any other hotel in the MGM group which are:

MGM Grand, Bellagio, City Center, Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Luxor, Excalibur, New York New York, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Cirus Circus and Railroad Pass.

There are plenty of places to eat within the hotels and along the 'strip'. A good steak will cost you $17 upwards and a bottle of wine start around $28. There are always deals around and the MGM hotel was offering their buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner for $29 + tax, which taken individually would cost $60.

Tip 7. Before you go to Las Vegas search the books and guides that are in the shops and online for any deals and discounts that are on offer. You could save enough for your gambling.

If you live north of London as we do, then getting to Gatwick in the early hours of the morning is not some thing you can get a friend to do, especially when there is six of you. There are three options, drive down and leave your car in a long stay car park. Stay over night at a local to Gatwick hotel, which provide long stay parking, within the price of the over night stay price. Or get a taxi to take you and pick you up on your return.

Over the years we have tried all three options and when we drove down for the first four day visit to Las Vegas we stayed at the Worth Hotel near to Gatwick. Another time we have driven down on the day of our flight and left our car in a long stay car park. I would recommend using http://www.bargain-breaks.org if you want to book a Hotel or Car Park. They provide a very good and competitive service.

Visit Yellowstone National Park, The First National Park in the World

Lower Falls, Yellowstone RiverImage by v1ctory_1s_m1ne via Flickr

Yellowstone National Park extends more than 3,400 square miles across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. It is the oldest, and thus the first, national park in the world, and has plenty of geysers, hot springs, and wildlife and unsurpassed beauty to intrigue and entertain anyone looking for a glimpse of true nature at its best. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem makes up a large part of the park, and is one of the largest untouched ecosystems that are still in pristine condition. The park was named for the rocks that are found in the canyon, which was formed by floods and soil erosion from the Yellowstone River.

Native Americans inhabited the Yellowstone National Park area for many years before the park was actually established. The first American to set foot in the area was John Colter, who was part of the Lewis and Clark expedition. F.V. Hayden was the one who actually started the set up of the national park due to his explorations in 1871 of the area that is now Yellowstone.

There are a variety of things to see and do at Yellowstone National Park, including a wide array of natural wonders and landscapes, as well as an array of wildlife and activities that can be enjoyed by anyone who visits the park. And since Yellowstone is such a huge park, more than 4 times the size of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, don't plan on only spending one day here.

Yellowstone National Park is known for rafting and hiking most commonly, but is also home to great fishing and kayaking experiences. The park is not alone in its location. It is surrounded by Grand Teton National Park and Custer National Forest, which are also protected national areas in the United States. There are about 250,000 visitors each month to the park, which covers more than 2.2 million acres of area and 370 miles of roadways that traverse the park. Additionally, the most visited place within this vast park is easily Old Faithful, one of the most popular geysers in the entire world. The yellow lake that is located in the park is also among the highest altitude lakes on the continent.

There are many buildings, museums, and structures in and around the park, including the Old Faithful Inn, and Fort Yellowstone. One neat adventure you can take is a historical tour guided by the national park authority, if history is what you're interested in. One thing is certain for all visitors to the park, though, if you're going to take a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, you really need to allow yourself to enjoy at least three to five days in the park to fully experience everything that there is to see. You will certainly enjoy your vacation to Yellowstone and have memories to share for a lifetime.

A River Rafting Trip - A Good Summer Vacation

Labor Day Whitewater RaftingImage by Zevotron via Flickr

Most of us are tired of the same old vacation and are looking for something just a little more exciting, while remaining safe and fun. Are you one of the many? If you want a good summer vacation, why not try a river rafting trip?

I know what you are thinking "but the kids"- not to worry, white river rafting is available at all levels. More and more of us are taking to the back country for our vacations. We're tired of the commercial vacation and looking for something that's more alive and that will stimulate our senses like never before. That's just what a river rafting trip will do for you. You'll get to see and hear the sights and sounds that nature has to offer.

If you are new to whiter river rafting, when you plan your rafting trip you'll want to make sure you choose the right package. A beginner rafting trip will be designed to get you hooked. You should start with a level one or two, which will provide you with all kinds of great adventure while keeping you save and at a level that's not difficult for you. Even as a beginner, you want to enjoy the thrill of paddling the rapids, never mind the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you.

As you get more skills you can turn it up a notch eventually making it to level five which requires a great deal of skill and stamina. But wow what a ride! Enjoy the rush of the challenge of navigating through the rapids, and don't forget to take in the invigorating surroundings. Now that's nature at its best!

The more experienced you get the more fun you'll have. Of course like any other sport or hobby it's going to take some work to develop the more advanced skills, but worth every minute. And besides what could be more fun than being able to develop those skills on the river while enjoying the sites and sounds around you.

There are some great white river rafting packages. How about a trip through Lodore Canyon? This river rafting trip will keep you enchanted from beginning to end. If you're an advanced rafter, you'll enjoy a highly technical ride that will have your oars busy all the time. And what an adrenalin rush!

Or maybe a river rafting trip through Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid country is more your style? Explore the remote canyons, crystal clear waters, and with more than 84 miles to explore you'll have the adventure of a lifetime.

Perhaps this is the summer to let the kids experience something outside the bounds of the concrete urban world most us live in. They'll have a great time and so will you! And think about the stories the kids will have to tell. Isn't great memories what life is made of?

It doesn't really matter where you plan your river rafting trip, nor the level of your skills. Because you see, your river rafting trip isn't just going to be a good summer vacation; it's going to be extra-ordinaire! And you'll have a tough time beating it next year. Get ready for the experience of a lifetime!
